fascinating facts about KISSING

*I did not type out this week’s episode of The Unknown Tomorrow, our Guest write-up, so let’s enjoy these fun facts about kissing, *wink*

1. The Science of kissing is called Philematology. *Complex name for such a simple act*

2. When you kiss someone, your heart beats faster and more oxygen reaches your brain. *Does that mean super-brilliant people kissed a lot?*

3. A woman in China partially lost her hearing after her boyfriend reportedly ruptured her eardrum with a passionate kiss. Apparently, the kiss reduced the pressure in the mouth, pulled the eardrum out and caused the breakdown of the eardrum. *This isn’t just a facinating info, it is a warning — mind how you kiss… dang!*

4. Kissing helps us work out if someone is a good match. *Yeah, trading saliva is supposed to help us figure out if someone’s a good fit… I prefer to trust my instinct*

5. Approximately two-thirds of people tip their head to the right when they kiss. Some scholars speculate this preference starts in the womb. *Well, the remaining one-third must the Nigerians cos they just love the head-long collision, lol*

6. Endorphins released during kissing brings on waves of euphoria. *If you kiss too long, you might end up as high as a ciga-weed smoker… Lol, just kidding… or not*

7. The insulting slang “kiss my ass” dates back at least to 1705. *No be today, lol*

8. The most important muscle in kissing is the orbicularis oris, also known as the kissing muscle, which allows the lips to “pucker”. *Interesting info*

9. The lips of both men and women resemble the lips of the vagina. *I could have done without this bit of info… yikes!*

10. The term “French kiss” came into the English language around 1923 as a slur on the French culture which was thought to be overly concerned with sex. In France, it’s called a tongue kiss or soul kiss because if done right, it feels as if two souls are merging. In fact, several ancient cultures thought that mouth-to-mouth kissing mingled two lovers’ souls. *Not anymore in the twenty-first century, uh huh*

11. It is possible for a woman to reach an orgasm through kissing. *Depends on the woman and the kisser… *sigh*

12. Mechanically speaking, kissing is almost identical to suckling. Some scholars speculate that the way a person kisses may reflect whether he or she was breastfed or bottle fed. *And to think I was mostly bottle-fed *side eyes*

13. Kissing is good for the teeth. The anticipation of a kiss increases the flow of saliva to the mouth, giving the teeth a plaque-dispersing bath. *I should anticipate it more often then *wink*

14. Common chimpanzees kiss with open mouths, but not with their tongues. Bonobos, the most intelligent of primates, do kiss with their tongues. *Hmm*

15. Diseases which can be transmitted through kissing include mononucleosis (“kissing disease”) and herpes. Contraction of HIV through kissing is extremely unlikely, though one woman was infected in 1997 when the woman and infected man both had gum disease. Transmission was likely through the man’s blood and not his saliva. *Also Ebola, these days… so, kiss carefully!*

16. The mouth is full of bacteria. When two people kiss, they exchange between 10 million and 1 billion bacteria. *I thought this should come in as a Kiss-alert, hehehe*

17. “X”s at the end of a correspondence letter represent the contact of the lips during a kiss. *Be sure when to use it *wink*

18. Kissing triggers the release of oxytocin in your body. *Oxytocin is often called the ‘love hormone’. That would explain why ’em telenovelas propagate lotta, lotta kissing *wink*

19. Women tend to rate kissing as more important in relationships than men do. *Ladies in da house, over to you… na true?*

And finally…

20. Scholars are unsure if kissing is a learned or instinctual behavior. In some cultures in Africa and Asia, kissing does not seem to be practiced. *Seems to have become the order of the day these day… hahaha*
